Alcantarilha Capela dos Ossos - Bones Chapel

Alcantarilha situa-se a 11 quilómetros de Silves. Foi outrora um povoado Árabe e retirou o seu nome do termo "Al-qântara" - "a ponte", mais tarde mudado para Alcantarilha, abreviatura de “pequena ponte”. A Igreja Matriz de Alcantarilha, com a sua macabra capela de ossos humanos é a sua principal atracção.
Perca um pouco do seu tempo em contemplação nesta capela. Certamente vai compreender também (olhando para aqueles crânios mesclados com as paredes, que um dia foram pessoas com sonhos e anseios iguais aos nossos) quão fátuas são as nossas paixões. Quão mínimas as nossas pequenas vitórias.

Alcantarilha, of Moorish origin, was first named Al-Qântara, meaning bridge, it was later changed to Alcantarilha, an abbreviation for 'Little Bridge'. At the Parish Church, of Our Lady “da Conceição” (16th Century) is famous for its rare 'Capela dos Ossos' (Chapel of Bones) a grim display of human skulls and bones sealed into the walls of the chapel.
Take sometime to contemplate this chapel. You will obviously understand (looking at the skulls enbeded in the walls that where once people with thoughts and dreams, like us) our fleeting passions. How small our victories are.
